General chairman of Homecoming is Mary Lou Poppa, senior. Appointed by the administration, Mary Lou has been "really busy" working daily on various Homecoming projects. Other committees include the queen committee with Alisa Longworth, senior, chairman. Alisa's responsibilities deal with ordering charms given to queen and her court. Parade chairman Michelle JLarrabee's job is deciding the i order of floats, making an agenda jof the order and giving this agenda to the sponsors. Patty Bennett and Lynn Gillum, seniors, are co-chairmen of the Publicity committee. They organized PA announcements and posters, all advertising Homecoming. Karri Wade, Mitch Harvey, Monte Blackburn and Gary Barker make up the art committee members. Working closely with the publicity committee, these students have been advertising Homecoming with their posters and other artwork. In celebration of Homecoming the student body has been;asked to wear red and white. A convocation, held during homeroom and led by Glenn McClain, featured the Homecoming queen candidates and court. This year's candidates are Sharon Hawk, Michelle Larrabee and Susan Moriarity. The junior class attendant is Cindy Love; sophomore class, Mel Hammond, and freshman class, Beth Forni. Southport's stage band accompanied the girls and their escorts. Given to the class with the greatest lung capacity was the coveted Spirit Stick. Also included in the convo was a skit titled "The Best Legs of Southport High School". Homecoming queen will be voted on by the students today, although the decision will not be announced until half-time this evening after the parade. Mums will be given during 6th period by the History Club. Ending Southport's Homecoming is the game with Brebeuf at 7:30. Student Council moves For student involvement Student Council, as in past years, will be trying to involve students in different activities. ^Sponsoring mini-courses, dances (and some fund-raising projects are a part of the council's curriculum. The main function for this year kill be building up the school spirit by mass involvement and voicing the student's opinion. According to Dave Llewellyn, sjvice-president, the council was not (created to change everything that the student thought to be wrong with the school. It is an organization created to benefit all students. Dave also said that success in the council does not depend on how many programs or ideas are torn down but rather that at least one new program or idea is born. Last year an outdoor activity period was introduced to the school. Also the basket of books program was started. Through the council, ideas like these can be relayed to the administration where the decisions of putting them into action are made. The first meeting for council officers and representatives will be this Monday. If any student has any ideas regarding school or sees any areas where changes should be made, the student should talk to the representatives about them. Recently elected officers of the four classes are Rick Simpson, Celia Carter, Wes Talor, Linda Anderson, Mark Flannary, Chuck Leek, Dan Badger, Ann Schoettle, Kris Robbins, Cricket Lee, Joel Hammond and Mark Dietel. Classes elect Their officers Elections were held by each class last week following four different convocations. During the convocations held in the auditorium, each candidate for president and secretary-treasurer was given the opportunity to present a speech before his or her respective class. Elected by a senior class of 414 were Rick Simpson, president; Wes Taylor, vice-president, and Celia Carter, secretary-treasurer. They jointly announced, "We'll need everyone in co-operation with us in order to make this year a very special year for the seniors and in uniting the entire school." Juniors Chuck Leek, Mark Flannery and Linda Anderson were selected as president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer, respectively, by a class of 451. Agreeing with need for more class participation, the junior officers stated, "Let's make this a grand old year at Southport!" In the sophomore elections Kris Robbins, Dan Badger and Anne Schoettle were chosen as president, vice-president and secretary- treasurer. The sophomores make up a class of 523. From the largest class this year, the freshmen class officers are president, Mark Dietel; vice-president, Joel Hammond, and secretary- treasurer, Cricket Lee. The freshmen have a class of 531. Of the 1929 students this year, 947 are girls and 982 are boys. Senior girls out number the boys by six; but junior boys have nine more to their number than the girls. Sophomores are nearly equal, with the boys having one more than the girls. Freshmen show a relatively greater gap between the sexes. There are 39 more boys than girls. In contrast, last year's enrollment was 2401 — 917 seniors with 49 more girls, 468 juniors with 12 more boys, 474 sophomores with four more girls, and 542 freshmen with 18 more boys. Musical talents found at S.H.S. Fall play Nov. 8, 9 Swing Choir practices; getting ready for their first performance. '■-■ Mrs. French has come up with another line of Golden Throats! This year's Swing Choir and Car- dinelles have been chosen and are already singing together, getting ready for their first performance. Swing Choir members consist of: sopranos: Jo Lovingood, Mindy Smith, Chris Kepright, Linda Ressler and Judy Renner; altos: Lynn Gillum, Celia Carter, Patty Tomamichal and Julie Leak; tenors: Steve Schutz, Phil Vanhorn, David Llewellyn and Tim Gray; basses: Dan Turner, Joe Coutz, Tyler Rainbolt, John Nolan and Phil Foley. Piano accompanist, Ann Pogue, drum player, Kevin Robbins, and string bass player Eric Gale are also members of the Swing Choir. This year's Cardinelles are Deb bie Chenowith, Barb Daily, Susan Dey, Eda Grahn, Kim Gennicks, Melinda Hawkins, Melinda, Hughes, Debbie Jacks, Rose Ann Kindred, Donna Jelase, Jayne Llewellyn, Connie Steeb, Donna Straub, Susie Smith, Jayne Sims and Donna White. Connie Bolser is the piano accompanist. New costumes have been chosen by the Swing Choir and will be ready for the first performance, which will be October 1. Swing Choir will be performing at Sherwood Country Club for the Southport Kiwanis. Cardinelles will also have their first performance October 1. They will be singing at St. John United Church of Christ. Mrs. French says, "They are really a great bunch of kids and I enjoy working with them." Tuesday tryouts for this year's fall play "The Loud Red Patrick" will be held in the auditorium at 3:30. The play is scheduled for Nov. 8 and 9. Anyone wanting to try out must obtain a form from Mr. Dan Gilligan in room 160 before school, homeroom, or after school. This year's play is based around the Flannigan family who lives in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Flannigan loves democracy forms and es tablishes a family council that gives each member as many votes as they are old. Things start happening when Mr. Flannigan's best friend, Mr. Finnegan comes to live with them.
