SHORTRIDGE DAILY ECHO Vol. 65, No. 73 Shortridge High School, Indianapolis, Thursday, January 3, 1962 3 Cents Exchange Student Sends Greetings Recently the Bcho Office received a card from one of the former Shortridge exchange students from the Netherlands. Elly Engelkes was a member of the Honor Moore family during . her stay in America. Elly came to the United States as a part of the American Field Service program. She spent her senior year of high school at Shortridge. The letter was sent from the Leeuwarden Station in the Netherlands December 28 arid was received by the Echo •office yesterday. The letter is •Repeated: "Dear Shortridgers, "It's been a long time ago 4tfice 'I wrote you and a lot has happened to all of you as well as to- me. I can hardly imagine that a full year has already passeo? since I left Indianapolis. I just wish I would have seen ""last year's Vaudeville, basketball, football, senior play, etc. Instead, I had a tough year at a Dutch university, with a lot oT extracurricular activities, especially orchestra, and a lot of fun, too, though. "This Christmas I have been thinking a lot of America and of the way I celebrated Christmas in Indianapolis, so differently and yet so wonderful. A lot of my friends sent me Christmas cards and I had a telephone call with my family. (I met Honor Moore last summer!) All this made me very homesick for America sometimes. I often think of what an American lady here told me: 'Holland is O.K., but I wish America weren't so far away!' I often wish I could just come over to see you. "The freshman exams of Dutch Medical School are terribly hard since there are so many students, and they have to select. This year I did not manage to do them all well, and I am studying like mad now to do better this year. "To end with I wish all of you a very Happy New Year. Continue to be as good for the exchange students to come as you were to me. I hope AFS will stay an important part of Shortridge. "Again, a Happy New Year to all of you. "Sincerely, "Elly Engelkes." Naturalists Combine Sledding, Bird Count An interesting note about the Naturalist Club Bird Census held December 27 is that many of the members invented a new method of observing birds. Upon finding a convenient hill, some members devised a way of combining sledding with bird counting. The results of their actions are unknown. Quill and Scroll Has Holiday Party The Al J. Kettler Chapter of the Quill and Scroll Society held their Christmas party December 28. Meeting at the home of Dick Brewer, the club's girls took over the kitchen to bake pizzas, while the boys gathered around the basement pool table. Bobbie Baldwin, Nedra Johnson, and Martha McWilliams played cooks. Bobbie brought brownies, Nedra brought the pizzas, and Martha made a fruit salad. The boys brought Cokes. Music Department Gives Holiday Program The annual music department Christmas program was presented to the school on the last day of school before Christmas vacation. Playing from the balcony, the Brass Ensemble began the program with various carols. As they finished the curtain arose on a quiet scene on the stage. Seated at a piano, Tom Preble, choir director, played a Christmas song in his homey surroundings reminiscent of the Christmas play props. A knock on the door admitted the Music Men. As they were removing an occasional scarf, another knock found the Girls' Ensemble at the door. Upon the suggestion that singing would be a nice thing to do, the two groups each sang then combined their groups to sing together. The Orchestra and Madrigal followed the previous groups with assorted carols. The orchestra's performance of "Sleigh Ride" was excellent, with the bells and authentic - sounding whip popping. Cheryl Boringer along with the A Cappella Choir performed several carols. Joined by the Concert Choir, the two choirs together ended the program. CALENDAR THURSDAY, JANUARY 3 Student Board, Auditorium, fifth period. Wrestling, at North Central, 6:30. Vaudeville Act pictures, stage, 3:20. FRIDAY, JANUARY 4 Junior-Senior dinner, Cafeteria, 6:00 p.m. Scecina basketball, gym. SATURDAY, JANUARY 5 Cathedral basketball, gym. MONDAY, JANUARY 7 Booster Club, Room 209, 3:20. Tests, periods .•»• and 7. EDITOR, SPONSOR, STAFF VACATION WITH YEARBOOK Vacation was certainly no holiday for Bobbie Baldwin, 1963 Annual editor—she worked every day including Christmas day! Some days included work from 9:00 in the morning until 5:00 p.m. while others lasted anywhere from noon until 1:00 in the morning. What it was that was so pressing was a deadline for 56 pages of the Annual. Late in December the copy —identifications for pictures, captions, headlines, paragraphs —for the 56 pages arrived from the printer. During vacation Bobbie worked along with Bruce Pearson, Annual sponsor; Dave Bourke layout editor; Jean Conley, who made copies of all 56 pages so that the Annual office would have a record of what appeared on those pages; Cathy Foutty, who "moused" or cleaned the glue off the pictures; Harry Gonyer, who helped with the paste-ups; Sharon Moore, who prepared 56 pages of copy for the next deadline; Tom Russell, who printed pictures at a moment's notice, plus performing various odd jobs; and Marijane Scott, who took several pictures. The problem was matching the returned copy with the pictures, then pasting both on special mounting boards. These boards are to be sent to the printer tomorrow, and they won't be seen again until the Annual appears in May or June. Wrestlers Go to North Central This Evening Armed with more city wrestling trophies than he can carry, Shortridge wrestling coach Paul Dill takes his grapplers out to North Central this evening for a 6:30 varsity and reserve meet. With four city champs and two runners-up in Shortridge's favor, this meet will be one of the toughest for the Panthers. However, North Central is looking forward with high hopes to this meet. With good team balance and many individual county title contenders, the Panthers could give the Blue Devils a good run for their money. The Shortridge lineup will probably ramain the same in nearly every division. Gerald Johnson at 133, will remain as a replacement for Steve Hopper, who Is still recovering from a knee ir.jury. Jim Blackwell, who strained an arm muscle in the final round of the city meet, will wrestle. . This North Central meet will be the first for the Devils since the city. TESTS START NEXT WEEK, JANUARY 7 Final test time is here again. These last grades are the ones that really count on the semester records so buckle down and bring up your average. Test schedule for the final six weeks is listed. Monday, January 7, 3 and 7 Tuesday, January 8, 1 and 6 Wednesday, January 9, 2 and 9 Thursday, January 10, 5 and 8 Friday, January 11, 4 Bill Gaus, a Shortridger from several years back, visited Shortridge yesterday.
