DAILY ECHO Vol. 69, No. 18 Shortridge High School, Indianapolis, Indiana Wednesday. October 5, 1966 Christmas Cover Rules Announced The rules for the Christmas Echo cover contest are as follows: 1. Two colors or less on colored or white paper 2. 8Vi"Xll" paper must be used 3. Must have words CHRISTMAS ECHO, 1966 4. Design must be original 5. Identification must be on the back of entry a. Name b. 3rd hour class c. 3rd hour room 6. Drawing must be on stiff board .. Any design in accordance with the Christmas theme is acceptable. All designs must be left in thc Echo office. The deadline for entries is 3:15, Monday, October 24. The selection will be made Monday. The winner of the contest becomes art editor of ihe Christmas Echo and will receive an award of $5.00. First and second honorable mentions will also be awarded. Copies of contest rules may be picked up in the art department or the Echo office. Publications Ad Staff Correlates Projects The publications ad staff has completed over three-quarters of its job this year. Ads were solicited for the Echo, athletic program. Junior Vaudeville program, and the Annual. Advertising for thc first three have been virtually completed. Over thc summer members of thc Dads' Club went out with pupils in order to get ads. This has been a trial experiment since in previous years there were four separate staffs. Students who have participated include Robert Booher. Mary Fatout, Greg Gifford, Shirley Harper, Jeff Holmgren, Judy Keenan, Nancy Kohn, Deborah L a w r e n c e , George McCauley, Benton Marks, Pam Percivai, Patricia Pinckney, Fred Rice, Marvin Sacks, and Sarah Sutherland. Robert Weaver is the sponsor. Dahlias Decorate Office Saucer-sized dahlias floating on the large serving tray in the main office were brought by Mrs. Ernestine McCree. The arrangement has been in the office for several days and is as fresh as when Mrs. McCree brought it. Registration will begin Friday, October 7, and extend until Thursday, October 13 in room 109 with Mrs. Mary Hults. Three scholarship's are offered through the PSAT. National Honor Society scholarship for secondary seniors who are members or who may be elected by March l, 1967. National Scholarship Service Fund for Negro students who wish to attend interracial colleges, and the Telluride Association Summer Program for juniors. R. Lloyd Green, vice-principal, stated, "It would be my recommendation that this test be taken by any senior who has not taken the Scholastic Aptitude Test previously but who plans to do so and every junior in the top half of his class. We have supplies for 200 people. They will be accepted on a first come, first served basis." Physical Science Club Welcomes All Pupils Interested in Science Arthur Oliver, sponsor of thc Physical Science Club which has replaced the Chemistry-Physics Club, states that the purpose of the club, open to all interested high school pupils, is designed to broaden one's knowledge in the various aspects of science. On Thursday, September 29, the newly formed club held its first meeting. Qualifications for office in the club are listed. The president must be a junior or senior having completed or be enrolled in iContinued on Page Four) Dr. Richards Gives Reference Books To SHS Library Robert Cronkhite, librarian, said, "Charity Dye library is grateful to Dr. Ruth Richards of the biology department for materials which she contributed for resource and supplementary usage throughout thc school." These materials are on English, history, and biology. There are seven volumes of Reader's Digest, "History of thc Changing World" by Geoffrey Barro- clough. "More Stories to Remember" by Thomas Castoln and John Beecroft (Volumes 1 and 2), "The End of Innocence" by Jonathan Daniels, "The Lion and the Throne" by Catherine Davis Bowen, "Autumn Across America" by Edwin Way, "The Annotator" by Alan Keen and Roger Lubbock, and 12 volumes of "American Journal of Botany." PTA Seeks Sundry Items for Frolic Mrs. Earl E. White, publicity chairman for the Family Frolic, has announced the articles needed for the various booths of the Frolic. Used clothing or other wearing apparel is needed for thc sale. For storage until November 18 or for pickup service, contributors may contact Mrs. Max Hathaway and Mrs. Horace Read, cochairman. Articles which are no longer used in the home will also be suitable for the sale. For storage until November 18 or for pickup service, Mrs. Donald Moore or Mrs. Roland Usher may be contacted. Match book covers with engraved names or salutation will bo sold. To place an order for these customers may contact Mrs. Alan Nolan and Mrs. William Hackett, cochairmen of this project. Lloyd Green, vice-principal, has announced the six weeks' test schedule. Tests begin Friday, October 7, periods 2, 4; Monday, October 10, periods 3, 5, 7; Tuesday, October 11, periods 1, 8; and Wednesday, October 12, periods 6, 9. Senior Council Members Elected By Class of 1967 Senior Council members were elected by thc seniors during the lunch periods Monday. October 3. The Senior Council, which consists of 12 girls and 12 boys and the five class officers is the governing body of thc senior class. These include football games and concerts. Book discussions, news programs, and educational discussions will also be given. Stanford Graduates Tom McDowell, 1962, ^ Willi Distinction Thomas William McDowell, a Shortridge graduate of 1962, was graduated from Stanford University with distinction last June. While he was at Shortridge, he served as junior class treasurer, was on the Senior Council and junior policy committee, and was tiie sports editor for the Echo. Mr. McDowell was the president of Fiction Club, Hi-Pl, and Quill and Scroll. He al.so participated in Key. Le Cercle Francais, Math, and Mu Alpha Theta clubs. He was a member of the Expedition to Knowledge Team, National Honor Society and was a National Merit finalist. He attended Stanford as a Merit scholar. His si;,ter, Lynn, is presently a senior at Shortridge.
