SHORTRIDGE E DAILY ECHO Vol. 56, No. 166 SHORTRIDOE HIGH SCHOOL, INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 1954 3 CENTS EVELYN ANDERSON RECEIVES $100 FOR ESSAY IN CONTEST Evelyn Anderson, Shortridge senior, has won a $100 award towards her education at Butler University for her winning essay ta the Secretaries' contest, sponsored by the Crossroads of America Chapter of the National Secretaries Association. •**" Evelyn, eighth ta her senior class, received a certificate from JoAnne Niehaus, Shortridgrad and Butler freshman, last year's winner, at a banquet of the association, May 26. To be eligible, the student must be in the upper third of her class and write a 500-word essay concerning the secretarial field. The contest has been held two years and is open to Marion County high school seniors. Evelyn has also received a half- tuition scholarship to the school. ROTC's to Hold Picnic The ROTC picnic wUl be held at Oeorge Washington Park tomorrow at 4 p.m., according to M-Sgt. Chester F. Senteney. The picnic will last until 8 pjn. Sgt. Senteney, commandant of the ROTC, urges that all cadets furnish their own transportation ana be prompt to the picnic. Everyone will assemble at the pavUlon in the park and all food except Cokes must be furnished by the cadets themselves. All-City Grading System Explained by Miss Pierson The Juniors of SHS will be ranked this year by a method which had been adopted by aU the Indianapolis high schools, according to Miss Margaret B. Pierson. This ranking is based on the average of points per credit. The total points of a pupU are divided by the number of credits attempted. Example: suppose a Junior had 4 A's 32 7 B'S 42 8 C'S 32 1 D 2 1 F 0 Talks, Announcement of Officers Highlight Key Club Banquet Thursday A. F. Hook, downtown chairman of the Kiwanis club, gave a short talk to the Key club members at their annual parents' banquet held Thursday night at Atherton Center. Joel W. Hadley, principal, and Claude M. Keesling, vice-principal, also gave short talks to the boys of this honor organization. FoUowlng the talks, Jerome Steiner, sponsor of the club, presented the new officers. They are Don Screes, president; Jim Loer, vice president; Frank Mead, secretary; and Morris Silverman, treasurer. 21 108 Pts. Thus 108 points divided by 21 credits attempted equals 5.143 ranking. If any person had aU A's his average would be 8.000 and a -person having all D's and no failures would have an average of 2.000. AU Juniors wUl be ranked by the end of the semester, so that they can get their rank from Miss Pier son in the office the last week of school in June. Under this system a student's summer school honor points are counted. - Dates for Semester End; Report Cards Listed Wednesday, June fl, is the last day of school, according to Robert L. The Satans have wins over Howe, 4-0; •Kokomo, 9-3; Ben Davis, 6-2; Cathedral, 2-1; Warren Central, 10-4; Zionsville, 4-3; Plainfleld, 6-3; Howe, 9-2; Attucks, 5-3; .Washington, 2-0; Southport, 3-1; and the most satisfying of the year when they ended a 12-game winning streak by downing the Broad Ripple Rockets, 3-2. The Satans' seven losses belong to ZlonsvUle, 6-8; Manual (IndlanapoUs), 3-4; Lawrence Central, 5-8; Manual (Louisville), 3-5; Cathedral, 7-8; Tech, 6-11; and the last game of the season to Lebanon, 7-10. Three of the teams being honored are the city champs as competition ta golf, traik, and tennis ls complete. The SHS basebaU team, currently com- tjettaE in the city tournev, also will be honored. Medals bought by the Dads' Club wUl be presented to the city champions at this time. The student price for the affair has been reduced to 75c. The adult price Is $1.50. The members of the Shortridge Hl-Y club will hold a picnic Thursday at the HoUlday Park. Members will leave school at 2:45 for this fourth annual affair. The members, who are invited to bring prospective members, will bring their own sandwiches while the club will provide drinks and desserts. BUl McFadden, secretary, is ta charge of the refreshments. The meeting wUl be an Informal affair, concluded with discussions and a tour of the park. Transportation will be provided by Paul Justice, sponsor, and other mem bers. Botany Drive Progresses; More Plants Needed The botany plant donation campaign for the Shortridge court has progressed rapidly, according to Mrs. Jean Prettyman, botany teacher and sponsor of the drive. With the 44 flower donations, she hopes to reach the goal which has been set at 100. At the present time students are testing the soil and have found It deficient ta several minerals. They are planning to correct it as soon as possible. Any donations wUl be greatly appreciated, according to Mrs. Prettyman. They may be brought to room 219.
