SHORTRIDGE DAILY ECHO Vol. 69, No. 23 Shortridge High School, IndlanapoUs, Indiana Wednesday, October 12, 1966 FRANK EDWARDS TO SPEAK TO HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISTS AT ANNUAL IHSPA CONVENTION The Indiana High School Press Association will hold its annual convention at Franklin College Saturday, October 29. Frank Edwards, newscaster for WLW-I and well known author, and Dr. Laurence Campbell, professor of English education and director of QuiU and Scroll Studies, will speak on Saturday at the general sessions. The schedule for the convention October 29 is as follows: 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. will be registration and a get-acquainted session; 10:00 a.m. the official convocation will open; 11:15 student campaign speeches for elective offices will take place; and at thc same time Mr. Shultz will speak to the advisers; '.2:15 p.m. a barbecue chicken luncheon will be served on the South Campus or the gymnasiu«*k>dependln£~bn PUPIL ASSISTANTS FOR MR. GREEN'S OFFICE LISTED Mrs. Mary Hults, secretary for Vice-Principal R. Lloyd Green, has announced the assistants for Mr. Green's office. Phillip Slates works period 1; Terrie Stovall, period 2; Lovceta Breeding, periods 3 and 4; and Linda Gill, period 5. Others are Barbara Jcrrett, period 6; Oliver Barnett, period 7; Richard Edyvean, period 8; and Kenneth Dea Kync, period 9. The various office duties are running the ditto machine, filing, alphabetizing, and serving as a messenger. Cleanup Committee To Work After Dance The Cleanup committee for the Homecoming dance have been chosen. They are as follows: Darryl Armistead, A.sher Benrubi, Clarence Bolden, Bob Booher, David Bradshaw, John Butsch, Bill Falender, Tom Fcr- rell, Pat Forbes, Preston Greene, Willie Hackett, Jeff Holmgren, Mike Jordan, Colin McCance, Stuart Miller, Claud Myers, Pat Nolan, Wally Ozols, Fred Rice, John Robb, Lou Schneider, Sam Test, Steve Wenholz, and Bob Winder. The chairmen of the committee are Mark Otten and Herbie Hughes. the weather; 1:30 panel discussions will be held consisting of a newspaper, yearbook, and career panels; also at 1:30 there will be an advisers' business meeting; and at 2:30 the closing convocation will be held; 3:30 a sock hop for the students and a social hour for advisers will be held. The convocation will adjourn at 4:30 p.m. Any pupil who would be interested in attending this convention, whether an editor, reporter, or journalism student, may sec Miss Jean Grubb in the Echo office,.room 124, for details. KNOWLEDGE TEAM TRYOUTS PLANNED The Evercisc in Knowledge team will hold tryouts October 25, at 3:30 p.m. in the teaches", cafeteria. Twenty-one pu- pils*have indicated interest in this program. Judging will be done by the heads of the various departments and will be based on the general knowledge of the pupil and his ability of fast recall. All faculty members are invited to attend the tryouts. David Blatt Is team manager. There is also a committee which has agreed to work with the team in various capacities such as scoring and timing, etc. This group will meet October 17 immediately after school. The manager, David Blatt, along with Larry Burdick and James Belt and various sponsors, will be present to help in advising and training the team. FROSH PHYSICALS ALMOST COMPLETE Miss Marie Moran, SHS school nurse, has almost completed her examinations of the freshman pupils and the pupils new to Shortridge. The checking of the pupils' teeth, throat, skin, and reflexes was done by Miss Moran, while her assistant girls checked their weight, height, and vision. Miss Moran said, "All 9Bs from Indianapolis public schools have carried their records with them ever since they first attended Kindergarten. The records are kept until the pupil graduates or becomes a loss to the school. Mr. Payne Announces Rules For Lilly Endowment Award Thomas Payne, head of the social studies department, has announced plans for the annual Lilly Endowment, Inc.. financial grant whicli is awarded to a qualified senior each year. The SI,000 scholarship is to. be applied to expenses during the first two years at college. First runner-up will receive a $500 scholarship. Similar awards are made by the Endowment to each of the 10 Indianapolis public high schools. Thc qualifications arc that the pupil must be a social studies major and rank ln the top 25% of his class. He must be planning to enroll in an accredited college. Research Paper To Be Written The pupil is to write a research paper, not less than 2,000 Mr. Green Issues Schedule of Events For Friday Shortridge Homecoming game against Cardinal Ritter High School will be played on Friday, October 14. at Julius field. Kickoff time will be 3:30 p.m., and R. Lloyd Green, vice-principal, has issued certain facts concerning the game and parade. Pupils participating in the parade will be excused from their eighth and ninth hour classes, but must have their game tickets and parade slips signed by their eighth and ninth hour teachers before Friday. All other pupils will attend eighth hour classes. The parade will begin moving at 2:00 p.m. Public address will signal pupils in classes to go to the windows to watch the parade. Shuttle buses start to load at 2:25 p.m. and continue until pupils are at the field. Those pupils having game and bus tickets will be excused at 2:40 p.m. All other pupils will remain until 3:15 p.m. Special schedule will be as follows: First period, 5:15-8:55 Second period, 9:00-9:40 Third period. 9:45-10:30 Fourth period: 10:35-11:15 Fifth period, 11:20-12:00 Sixth period, 12:05-12:45 Seventh period, 12:50-1:30 Eighth period, 1:35-2:25 Ninth period, 2:30-3:15 words long. The paper is to be prepared in several steps, which are due on certain dates. By November 2 the subject of the paper should have been selected and limited, according to Mr. Payne. A preliminary outline and working bibliography should be completed by November 16. After having read and taken notes, thc pupil should have assembled the notes and written the final outline by December 14. The first draft is due January 16 and the final draft will be submitted by February 7. Oral Examination To Include Contents Later, the pupil will be given an oral examination over the contents of his paper. Tho examination will also cover all social studies courses taken in high school. Any senior interested in applying for the Lilly Endowment, Inc., scholarship should see Mr. Payne, head of the history department, for more specific information. Mums the Word FRIDAY IS DAY FOR ANNUAL SALE OF FLOWERS Chrysanthemum Day and Homecoming are synonymous for Shortridge. Ever since 1953, just after the local chapter of Quill and Scroll had been installed in thc spring, members have sponsored the sale of Mums for a fall football game. When Homecoming became a tradition, the honorary group decided that it was the logical time to have thc sale of Mums. Three hundred flowers have been ordered, and early Friday morning they will be delivered and will be sold by members of Quill and Scroll, some of the Echo editors and reporters, and journalism class members who have been drafted to help. If the sale goes along as it usually docs, before school and during thc first periods and the early lunch periods will be thc busy ones. The supply is usually exhausted by thc time that the parade starts. Thc large white Mums, complete with Shortridge blue ribbon and a corsage pin, will be sold for 50 cents. No advance orders will be solicited.
