SHORTRIDGE ( There are two purposes of the Shortridge Day observance this year. The first is that which we have recognized in various projects throughout the week. This is the true excellence of Shortridge in every consideration: heritage, opportunities, achievements, and preparation. Shortridge Day is certainly the time when students should acknowledge the accomplishments of their school and fellow pupils. This year, however, we have tried to make Shortridge Day more than a simple day of praise. Shortridge is presently undergoing a great transition, in which its population and direction are being changed. In order to maintain the outstanding record of success the school has reached in past years, everyone must work even more diligently and purposefully. Furthermore, there are some who criticize Shortridge be- SHORTRIDGE cause they have the misconception that a shifting school population tolls the end of Shortridge achievement. As magnificently demonstrated in the last few weeks, those who distribute the recognitions and awards for outstanding accomplishment have not adopted this opinion, but it too often prevails in formerly Shortridge neighborhoods. Thus Shortridge Day must represent a twofold meaning this year. It is important to acknowledge the successful endeavors of. the students. This year, however, it is also vital that the students realize their responsibility to support Shortridge; to uphold its merits under criticism; and to strive to preserve the heritage which has been accumulated throughout a century.
