By Joel Whitaker You get some idea of the size of this great land of ours when you reaUze that about 4,000 drivers a day run out of gas, not one of them in sight of a filling station. (Changing Times) Dept. of Useless Info—The average person speaks at a rate of 125- 160 w.p.m. but thinks four times faster, according to a Pennsylvania State University researcher. Wanted - Family to House AFS Feminine Exchange Student Would you enjoy the opportunity and companionship of a foreign exchange student Uvlng in your home? The Shortridge Student Board is planning to sponsor another student and this time has asked that the AFS send a girl from AustraUa; England, France, New Zealand,, Scotland, or Switzerland to attend1 Shortridge. . • The family with wfcom the girl would Uve would be expected to make the girl a member of the family and give her the experience of American family Uvlng. The family may have a daughter of any grade level. The host and hostess provide Uvlng expenses and the school provides lunch and carfare if necessary. Mrs. Eugenia Hayden, dean of girls and sponsor of the Student Board, is interested in talking with any famUy interested in housing a girl. The Student Board has sponsored two exchange students. Two years ago Knud Mork was at SHS from Denmark and Uils year Ernesto Culebras is here from Madrid, Spain. Mr. Grubbs Tells Math Club About Rockets Robert C. Grubbs, head of the physical science department, talked to Math Club members Monday afternoon at the regular meeting of the group. His talk concerned rockets. He traced rocket development and ex plained the rocket parts. Mr. Grubbs, who is quite inter ested in rockets, is a member of the Rocket Society of America. Miss Ellen Ocker is sponsor ot the Math Club. Annual Candidates to Give Summary of Qualifications During the junior meeting today during homeroom period the candidates who have qualified to run for the office of Annual editor of the 1960 yearbook will introduce themselves and give their qualifications. Susan Graves, Diane Neumann, and Nancy Rader have indicated that they are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to serve as editor of the yearbook. The election will be held April 23. PARTIAL 'BOY FRIEND9 CAST RELEASED WEDNESDAY Auditions for the French musical, "The Boy Friend," were held Tuesday, April 7. Betty Young will play PoUy, a young girl; Alice Rawlings, Maxie, the school charmer; Susan Schumacher, Mme. Dubonnett, the headmistress of the school; Diane Grosvenor, Hortense, a maid who knows all and sees all; and Joe Lah: will portray Tony, a tultor to Polly. i Phil Thrasher will act as boy friend;* Sylvia Schindler as "Nancy; Serita Slocum as Fay; Mary Ellen Blaisdell as*Dulcie. Other members of the class are Ploo's father -Percival Bftwne, portrayed by Oeorge Sundell; Lord Brokhurst by Brad Bate; Lady Bokhurst by Barbara Keenan; Le Gendarme by Richard Cohen. The entire cast has not been chosen as yet and Joe Mafflt, student director, hasn't announced a definite date for its performance. The requirements for the musical were at least 10 points toward Thespian membership. The cast was selected by Joe Maffit, director, and Nancy Rader, assistant director. Three Entrants Added According to a recent release, 21 students have withdrawn from school whUe three pupils have enrolled in Shortridge. Newcomers are James Crouch, Vernon, Indiana; Carl Donald, North Central; Linda Mark, Louisville, Kentucky. Losses include Eleanor Batton, Jerry Beaumont, Thomas Beaumont, James Beckham, Margo Blackwell, Nola Jean Curry, Nicky Doney, Paul Duckette, Shirley Fletcher, James Gant, Nicholas Hatfield, Sylvia Kager, Robert Jackson, WendeU Martin, Luster Oliver, Linda Podgorski, James Porter, Christine Rosenbaum, Thomas Rudy, Jacqueline Sears, and Lawrence Warfield. Committees to Plan Prom "Everyone must help in order to make the dance a real success," said Pat Howell and PhU Nicely, cochairmen of the annual Junior Prom. Today there wiU be a meeting of all prom committees ln room 305 after school. TWELVE SENIOR BOYS VIE FOR 'KING OF THE ISLAND' "King of the Island" will be chosen from the 12 candidates nominated by a special committee of seniors at the Hawaiian Hop, to be held in the Shortridge gym, April 18 from 7:30 to 10:30, school time. Candidates are Jeff Boles, Mike Burgett, Dick Caplin, Kent CUse, David Dirks, Joe Hood, Jerry Klapper, Pete Lunte, Mike Moulton, Gordon Pruett, A. B. Rudy, and Mike Smith. The spring dance, sponsored by the senior class, is traditionally a turn-about affair in which the girls invite the boys, and perform all the duties of a host. One of each couple attending the dance must be a senior. Also traditional at the dance is the competition and award given to the girl making the most interesting corsage for her date. Committees planning the dance were appointed by Bill Bowe and the other senior officers. The chairmen and personnel are listed. Each City High School May Select Senior . for IU Extension Award Indiana University extension division is giving one full-time scholarship covering fees for 15 semester hours credit each semester or two half-time scholarships covering fees for 7'/2 hours' credit each semester to each IndlanapoUs high school. Each school is entitled to designate one student to receive one of the scholarships. If the student does not use the award, the scholarship may be given to a student participating in the competitive examination, which will be given in August. Those achieving best results in a competitive examination will be awarded three f uU-time or six half- time scholarships; however, the competitive examination is open to anyone above 18 years old. Anyone planning to attend IU extension full time in the fall should see Mrs. Dorothy Otto, senior class sponsor. Senate Meets Today Today the Shortridge Senate plans to meet in room 210 at 1:35. The trial of Senator Goldwater (Allen Tumey) will continue. Don Kercheval is sponsor.
