A Publication of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra Fall 1997 ■ ■ ■ ■ ... : Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University 4600 Sunset Avenue Indianapolis IN 46208 J CO PLANS TRIPLE CELEBRATION AT GALA OPENING NIGHT FESTIVITIES by Charles Manning, Director of Operations The Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra's 1997-98 Gala Opening Night concert, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, will mark several important milestones for the Orchestra. The ICO will begin its tenth year as Orchestra-in-Residence in Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University, as Maestro Kirk Trevor begins his tenth year as Music Director and Principal Conductor. In addition, the concert will also be the opening night event of Clowes Hall's Great Artist Series. The soloist for this collaborative effort will be renowned violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, who has performed on concert stages throughout the world. She will play the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. "The opening night with Nadja will be the start of a truly thrilling year for the ICO," Maestro Trevor said. "This will be our best season ever!" Other works on the program include Schubert's Overture to Rosamunde, the "Haffner" Symphony (No. 35) of Mozart, and Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite. Reserved seating tickets for Opening Night, as well as full season subscriptions, are available from the ICO Office, telephone 317/940-9607. The Masterworks season will continue with the first of four "Monday Night Music" programs, on November 10 at 7:30 p.m. The world premiere of Indianapolis composer James Beckel's The Glass Bead Game: Concerto for Horn after Hermann Hesse will feature ICO hornist Kent Leslie. In addition, Deirdre Chadwick, recently appointed principal oboe of the Orchestra, will be heard in Marcello's Concerto for Oboe, Strings and Continue The Monday Night Music concerts feature festival seating, a pre-concert discussion and interview "Meet the Performers" at 6:45 p.m., and a post- concert reception with free refreshments for the audience and musicians. Robert Porco, guest conductor, and the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir will join the Orchestra for the annual holiday (see Celebration, p. 2) Violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg GALA RECEPTION TO FOLLOW OPENING CONCERT A sumptuous Apres Cafe will open October 18 for a coffee-and-dessert reception celebrating three important musical landmarks: Maestro Kirk Trevor's tenth year as Music Director of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra's tenth year in residence at Clowes Memorial Hall, and the appearance of renowned violinist Nadja Salerno- Sonnenberg as guest artist. The Clowes Hall stage will be converted into the cafe following the Orchestra's opening concert with Miss Salerno- Sonnenberg at 8 p.m. that evening. The cafe will open at approximately 10:15 p.m. Concert-goers are invited to mingle with the musicians and to meet special guest of honor Ms. Salerno-Sonnenberg. Tickets for the Apres Cafe are $30, with patron tickets at $50. Reservations may be made by contacting Ms. Sherry Otto, 2900 One American Square, Indianapolis, IN 46282, telephone 684-4232.
