Henry Leck, Founder & Artistic Director Early Spring 1999 A Quarterly Newsletter for all the Friends of ICC ICC Creates its Alumni Association Suzanne Farid, a junior at DePauw University, is studying sociology with an interest in public relations. This past January, during her Winter Term, she interned with ICC's Managing Director Ginger Markham. She was given the significant task of laying the groundwork for the inception of ICC's Alumni Association. And who better to undertake this effort than an ICC alumna? Here is Suzanne's story in her own words. I thought I might get to ease into this internship. Wrong! Handing me the phone number for the San Francisco Girls' Chorus (SFGC), an organization with a reputable alumni association, Ginger gave me my assignment for the month: create the framework for ICC/ IYC's Alumni Association. First Steps I contacted the SFGC for advice on where to begin. How does one start an Alumni Association? The SFGC was very helpful. They told me about their alumni activities and involvement, and sent me a copy of their association's by-laws as a reference. Early on, I also met with Bill Farkas of the Butler University Alumni Office, to discuss the essentials for an alumni association. I reviewed and adapted those guidelines to create the initial proposals and guidelines for the ICCAA. Another early task was to try to relocate some of the singers we had lost contact with. Via the Internet, we were able to find more than fifty families of former singers! However, we still have a number of "lost" alumni. (See article below.) We hope that anyone who knows how to contact these past singers will notify us. One of the key intents of the ICCAA is to maintain a current database of addresses: not only to keep our alumni informed of new and exciting Choir news, but also to encourage former singers to keep in touch with each other. Who is Eligible Membership to the ICCAA is open to any chorister who participated in the Indianapolis Children's Choir and/or Youth Chorale for at least one year. Members will receive newsletters and announcements regarding the Choir and recent happenings in the lives of fellow alumni. Additional Plans We hope to establish an ICCAA Board of Directors whose responsibilities will include organizing social gatherings and other activities that our former singers are interested in. If you are an 1CC/IYC Grad If you are a choir graduate, you probably have many fond memories of the friends you made in choir; but you might find it difficult to stay in touch. With the advent of the ICCAA, we hope to reunite you former singers with ICC and each other. Plans are in place for inviting ICC alumni to special concerts and events where they will be recognized. The first of these events will take place at the 1999 Angels Sing concerts. We Need Your Help This organization can only become as strong as the effort that the alumni are willing to put forth. This will also be an opportunity for alumni to continue to support ICC/IYC. From volunteers to donations and more, the ICCAA will enrich our choral heritage and complete our circle of song. Suzanne, an ICC alumna, laid the groundwork for the Alumni Association. Then: Suzanne was in ICC for seven years. She started in Chamber Choir and advanced, spending her last three years in Tl. She also sang in IYC one year. Her most memorable ICC experiences include the European Tour, and performing in Carnegie Hall, and the South Pacific Tour. While in Lebanon High School, Suzanne was a member of the Madrigal Choir and Marching Band. She also sang in and helped direct several school musicals. Now: Suzanne is a junior at DePauw University, studying Sociology and minoring in German and Communications. She is involved in DePauw Community Service, Concert Choir, and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Before interning at ICC, she spent a semester studying in Vienna, Austria. Suzanne says that her experience in ICC helped to develop her love of languages and travel, but she learned the most from the people she met and the friendships she made.
