Dance Kaleidoscope To Perform
Dance Kaleidoscope, Indianapolis' professional modern
dance company, will perform on
April 14, 15, and 16 at the Indiana
Repertory Theater.
The IRT is presenting the spring
dance concert as a means to further creative interaction between
the professional arts organizations
in Indianapolis.
The company, Therese
Chatelaine, Deborah Chernin,
Michelle Jarvis, Karen M. Littman, Ginger Martin and Robin S.
Wilson, under the coordination of
Artistic Director Cherri Jaffee,
plans a program of seven pieces
with three world premieres and an
Indiana premiere.
"Bodyworks," a favorite from
past concerts, will open the performance. Clever and humorous,
"Bodyworks" is an energetic study
of texture and space. In "Glimpses
of Gershwin," an abstract jazz
ballet is choreographed to Gershwin's three preludes. "Something
Beyond," a world premiere
choreographed by Bud Kerwin,
ends the first half of the concert.
Mr. Kerwin, Assistant Professor of
Dance at Butler University,
received his training at the Ballet
Russe School in New York. Before
coming to Indianapolis, he was Ar
tistic Director of the Columbus
Ballet Company in Ohio. In 1976 he
choreographed a production of the
Bernstein MASS under the supervision of Leonard Bernstein.
Two world premieres open the
second half of the concert. "Hide
and Seek (Ready or Not Here I
Come)," a playful jazz piece
parodying the children's game and
"Playing Jealousy?" a look at the
complexities of jealousy. Both are
choreographed by Estelle E.
Spurlock. Ms. Spurlock was seen
this past October dancing the solo
"Cry" as a member of The Alvin
Ailey Dance Company at Clowes
Hall. In 1978 she will be
choregraphing pieces for Ailey's
Dance Company I and II. The sixth
piece, "Dreams for Desai," is an
interpretation of a dream sequence.
An Indiana premiere, "Sloe
Gin," a three-sectioned piece for
five madcap women in Forties-
style dresses, ends the concert.
This work was choreographed by
Rachel Harms. Ms. Harms, a
member of the newly formed Ber
tram Ross Company, attended the
New York University School of the
Arts. This piece was selected for
the June 1977 American Theatre
Laboratory Choreographers'
Showcase.
The premiere dances have been
funded through a grant from the
National Endowment for the Arts
and the Indiana Arts Commission.
Costumes for the concert are by
IRT's resident costume designer,
Arnold S. Levine, who most recently designed the costumes for HOW
THE OTHER HALF LOVES.
