Celebration Today To Mark
Monument Circle Reopening
The Circle City gets its name back
today.
Monument Circle, closed for seven
months, will be reopened with a gala
citywide celebration, with not one but
four ribbon-cuttings at 1:20 p.m. and
entertainment from 12:30 p.m. to 10:30
p.m.
Decked out in red brick — 667,656 of
'em — and clean white concrete with
greenery to set off the design, the Circle
will be displayed in ceremonies that city
officials hope will rival those marking the
1902 dedication of the Soldiers and Sailors
Monument that rises from the center of
Indianapolis.
Then, the celebration included original
poetry read by James Whitcomb Riley
and an original march composed for the
occasion by John Philip Sousa, all presided over by Gen. Lew Wallace, Hoosier
author of Ben Hur.
TODAY'S EVENTS include entertainment by country singer Barbara Man-
drell and a rendition of Sousa's composition, "The Messiah of the Nations," by
the 74th Army Band and bands from
Arsenal Technical, Speedway and Franklin Central high schools.
The ceremonies carry special significance for the many public and business
officials who put their faith and funding
behind the Circle's facelift. The $1.8
million renovation was a dream that

to 4:30 p.m., Christian Theological Seminary Repertory Theatre; 5:15 p.m. to
5:45 p.m., Butler University Swing Choir.
• STAGE FOUR - 3 p.m. to 3:30
p.m., Civic Theatre; 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.,
Indianapolis Brass Quintet; 5:15 p.m. to
5:45 p.m., International Center. Special
