Angela F. Braly
President and Chief Executive Officer
WellPoint Inc
120 Monument Circle
Indianapolis, IN 46204
Dear Ms. Braly:
Our local union represents 35,000 workers in the California service
industries and many of our members receive their benefits through
WellPoint plans, through a combination of employer contributions that
come out of our contract settlements and direct contributions from our
members. Taxpayers in our communities contribute to WellPoint as well.
As customers of WellPoint we were disappointed to learn of the
company's support for organizations and politicians who promote anti-
worker policies such as the reduction or elimination of collective
bargaining rights and the repeal of health care reform. In
a recent statement, WellPoint said, "We are committed to participating in
the political process in a responsible way that serves our best interests
and the best interests of our shareholders and customers." WellPoint's
actions are clearly NOT in our best interests. It is through collective
bargaining that we are able to negotiate for the health care benefits our
families need. WellPoint's billions come from the pockets of workers,
taxpayers, and other employers. They should be used for health care, not
to promote extremist policies.
We call on WellPoint to quit ALEC, quit the U.S. Chamber and stop
funding extremist organizations and anti-worker politicians like Scott
Walker, Mitch Daniels and John Kasich.
Sincerely,
^yitfuK £o*<z£i
