Bates-Hendricks Newsletter 2015 May It’s Payback Time! Immanuel United Church of Christ is located at the corner of East Street and Prospect Street. They have been very good to Bates-Hendricks Neighborhood and our association. They allow us to use their building for our meetings, steered us to Northview Church and their Good Neighbor Weekend project, and help with other projects in the area. At their next national gathering, June 5-6, they have set a goal of assembling 1,000 School Kits and 1,000 Hygiene Kits. Each local association has been asked to collect two specific items for this project. The Southeast Association (of which Immanuel is a part) will be collecting 1,000 Hand Towels (approximately 16” x 28”) and 3,000 spiral notebooks (single subject). Perhaps the good neighbors in Bates-Hendricks would be willing to donate some of these two items. The items need to be turned in by Sunday, May 10. The next Bates-Hendricks Neighborhood Association meeting is Monday, May 4. Consider bringing these items to the meeting and we will see that they are given to the church. You probably could bring these items to the church any day they are open, too. Bates-Hendricks Secretary, Lydia Brasher, will be the contact person: secretary@bateshendricks.org. City Issues Reminder About Maintaining Lots The Department of Code Enforcement (DCE) wants to remind citizens that the City’s high weeds and grass program will begin once again this season. In the coming weeks, the City of Indianapolis will dispatch inspectors to visit neighborhoods that have had the highest rates of weeds and grass violations. DCE inspectors and mowing vendors will assess various areas around the City in order to encourage property owners to properly maintain properties and lots, which can also help minimize blight in neighborhoods. Vegetation over 12 inches in height is considered high weeds and grass. Property owners who receive a notice of violation have five days from the date the notice is mailed to mow their overgrown property. If a property owner fails to mow the property, the City will send a mowing vendor to mow the property and will bill the property owner for the service at a rate of at least $353 per lot. Residents may report a high weeds and grass violation by calling the Mayor’s Action Center (MAC) at 327-4MAC, by logging on to RequestIndy at www.indy.gov/requestindy, or by using the RequestIndy Mobile Application. More information about the City’s high weeds and grass program is available at www.indy.gov/weeds. Don’t Forget to Bring in Your Trash Cart(s) Aside from looking “trashy”, leaving your carts out after the trash has been picked up makes using the sidewalks dificult, especially for people with strollers and those in wheelchairs. Sometimes trash carts block the sidewalk so much that people are forced out into the street, which can be dangerous for pedestrians. Be a good neighbor and make sure your trash cart is brought in from the curb after each Tuesday pickup. Thanks!
