Bates-Hendricks Newsletter 2011 November December Meeting to Be a Social Gathering The December 5 Bates-Hendricks Neighborhood Association meeting will be a time for socializing with neighbors. The association will provide sandwiches and drinks and will rely on all you good cooks out there for side dishes and desserts. We usually have some type of entertainment as well. Hope to see everyone there! The November 7 meeting will be a normal meeting at Immanuel United Church of Christ at 6:30pm. Leaf Season Has Arrived Leaf pickup will start on Monday, October 24 and go through Friday, December 2. All leaves need to be bagged for pickup. Kraft paper bags are acceptable, but not recommended. Residents may set out up to 40 bags of leaves per week in addition to regular trash. The bagged leaves should not be set directly in contact with the 96-gallon cart but kept three to five feet away (or else the cart may not be able to be emptied). The leaves will be picked up separately from regular trash. The leaves that are collected are taken to Southside Landfill where they are turned into compost. When ready, the compost is made available to Indianapolis residents at no charge. Call 247-6808 for availability. Update on the Keys to the Neighborhood Project Neighbors recently moved the lipstick red piano and piano bench that lived on the median under the gazebo on South New Jersey Street all summer and autumn to its winter storage place. It was an amazing season of musical surprises. Often music from the piano wafted through the neighborhood in the early evening. Sometimes the sounds were more experimental, but all that were within earshot agreed that it was an amazingly successful experiment. Thanks to the many that brought music to our collective garden. It is significant to note that the piano was shown a great deal of respect and for that we are thankful. Both the piano and bench are in great shape and in remarkable tune. Barring no unforeseen circumstances, the piano will return with a fresh coat of outrageous paint next May. If you are in Backyard Birds picking up birdseed, chicken feed, or a birdfeeder for winter please thank the owner, Brandt Carter, who donated her family piano for this project. Backyard Birds is on 54th Street west of Marco’s Restaurant. Brandt Carter is a lifelong friend and longtime supporter of Bates-Hendricks. By Greg Allen
