2014-11-3 BHNA minutes The Bates-Hendricks Neighborhood Association met Monday, November 3, 2014. President John Winter welcomed everyone. Officer John Cohen, IMPD Southeast District, was present to take any questions and concerns we might have. John introduced the new president of SEND (Southeast Neighborhood Development Corp.). Mr. Smith comes to SEND after twenty-two years as real estate manager for the City of Indianapolis. He says his passion is community building and will pursue this goal. Nicole Markle was present from the Southeast Timebank Task Force. She explained that this is a system that links people with various skills for exchange of services. There will be a showing of the film “Time As Money,” on Sunday, December 7 at 5 pm at the Lincoln Community Center at the corner of East and Lincoln Streets. This film explores Timebanking through the experiences of Timebankers all over the country. For more information or if you would like to join the task force call Nicole Markle at 502-225-0788 or timebanktaskforce@gmail.com. Lisa Laflin, Mayor’s Neighborhood Liaison, was present and reminded us that leaf pickup begins November 10th and goes until December 5th. Each household is permitted 40 bags of leaves weekly disposal. Place leaves in large plastic trash bags or specially-built large paper lawn-waste bags. Place the leaf bags out by 7 am on your regular trash day and to keep all bags at least three feet away from the 96 gallon cart. She also gave us a flyer on trash and recycling issues. For more information go to www.Indy.gov/DPW. Great Schools is national organization that produces a guide to all schools. To access this information go to their website www.greatschools.org/Indianapolis. Kyle Markley was present from Healthy Homes. This group has HUD grants to check homes for the presence of lead and abatement. There are requirements for these services so check their website. Abram Hess, at student at the IU School of Dentistry, 1121 W. Michigan on the campus of IUPUI. Services are done by students under the supervision of professors and typically are available for fees lower than those charged by private dentists. Most insurance companies are accepted. Cash, check, money order, VISA, MasterCard, and Discover Cards are accepted. For information call 317-274-7433. John reported that this past Saturday and Sunday was Good Neighbor Weekend. There were many volunteers from inside and outside the neighborhood and a great many projects were completed. He also reported that the East Street bridge is finished and some touchups are being completed. He reported that there was a delay in receiving Bates-Hendricks polos and button down shirts. John reported that Reconnecting Our Waterways (ROW) is moving along and that the next meeting is November 24th, 6:30 pm at the Youth Center at 924 Shelby. Lance Boehmer, East Street Quality of Life chair, reported that the group is reviewing projects and preparing a proposal for a grant for next year. Treasurer Kate Reinhardt was present to collect dues.
