Tech Student Earns Gold
Medal at National Contest
Arsenal Technical High
School junior Thomas
Robertson, 16, reached for
the gold and grasped it this
summer at a competition
measuring the skills of
young chefs. Thomas and
two teammates from other
states received a gold medal
in the Future Homemakers
of America Home Economics Related Occupations.
Thomas already had won
a gold medal at the state
level and was the only contestant from Indiana to participate at the national competition in July in New Orleans. About 5,000 young
people from throughout the
United States attended the
convention. Thomas was
one of about 100 to compete.
The young competitors
were given 20 minutes to
look at recipes and devise a
plan sheet after which they
were given an hour to prepare the dishes. The meal
consisted of spiced catfish,
chicken and okra gumbo,
steamed rice, candied yams
and fudge pie with chantilly
cream and strawberry
coulis.
Thomas, who helps run
the Colonel's Cupboard
model restaurant at Tech,
hopes to become a chef.
