When in Tech, Jay, as his friends call him, was an active member of the Music Department and Drama Club. He played in the band both in Tech and Butler. While in high
school he spent all his spare money (earned as a newsboy) for tickets to the lyric to
hear named orchestra and band leaders. He was such an enthusiastic fan of Horace
Heidt that he sat through four continuous shows when he played there* Jay played
second lead in the Tech senior play, "Daddy Long Legs". After his graduation, Jay
accepted a minor job in radio with WB017 at Terre Haute. From there he went to Cincinnati where he was announcer for WLW. He left there to go into the Army to do his
bit as a good American. After the Army he headed for Hollywood where his radio manager decided that his name was not right for radio, and he was christened "Stewart".
In Hollywood, because of his big smile, his genial disposition, and his ability to
get a laugh, his success grew rapidly. He has probably been seen many times this
past summer by Tech students on the Al Pearce show. Jay is a Tech alumnus of whom we
are proud and of whom we expect to hear much in the future. If anyone wishes to know
where he is and what show he*s playing, just ask a sweet little Tech teacher, Mrs.
Ressie Fix, whom Jay visited last week and whom he calls "Mommie".
