News and Notes of The Athenaeum Pops Orchestra
Friday, July 5, 2002
Welcome! Tonight's rehearsal is one of the three
final Friday night rehearsals to prepare for our
concert in Garfield Park on July 26th. The strings
will be working hard on Schindler's List and the
full orchestra will rehearse at 8 PM.
Congratulations on a great 4th Concert! The
concert last night was a terrific success for the APO. Several
people commented on how much they enjoyed our playing.
You are to be commended for great attitudes in spite of the
heat.
Do you know of people who should be asked to
audition for the APO's 2002-03 season???
Auditions and interviews will be held at 7 PM on August 2nd
and 9th. Please contact Jim Wells with names you may have.
We need add to our string section and fill out the holes in the
tevinds and brass as well. We are also looking for people who
Pvould be on our sub list for rehearsals and concerts.
Remember to let Lydia know if you cannot be at
a rehearsal. In many cases she will try to contact a sub in
order for us to properly rehearse.
Proposed Mission Statement After much discussion
and invitation for input from members of the orchestra, the
mission statement committee is proposing the following
statement of mission for the APO.
The mission of the Athenaeum Pops Orchestra is to:
• make music for the enrichment, education, and
enjoyment of Indianapolis-area audiences with
an emphasis on diverse and under-served
populations,
• provide educational and performance
opportunities for qualified members, and
• preserve the musical and cultural heritage of
the Athenaeum and its surrounding
communities.
Mark your calendars!! August 16th at 7 PM will
begin our 2002-03 season with a kick-off
^rehearsal/party here at the Athenaeum. Think about
^vhich players in your musical circles you would
like for us to invite to audition. A few of the reasons
for having an extra special rehearsal on August are:
4.
To introduce new members who have
previously been auditioned and
accepted as members of APO
To allow present members a chance to
commit to the responsibility of the new
season.
To build a sense of pride in the APO
heritage and the possibilities for
excellence in the upcoming season.
To establish and emphasize an audition
procedure that alleviates the "anyone
can join us" attitude, or the "we can't be
too choosy" attitude.
To help establish a "we can do it"
attitude among members and
supporters that bleeds over in to music
making and future concerts, fund-raisers
and social events.
Bonus Rehearsal on Saturday morning, July
20th. Yes, that's right. You have a chance to help
improve our Garfield Park Concert by being with us
on Saturday, July 20th, from 9:30 AM until noon at
ROBERTS PARK UNITED METHODIST
downtown. Room location and exact address to be
given later. Plan to be with us.
