On the town
Sims set for final PianoFest recitals

Lori Sims, 1993 Beethoven Fellow of the American Pianists Association, will play the final recitals on the organization's
PianoFest Series Thursday and
April 23.

ven's "Pathetique" Sonata,
Schumann's
"Papillons," Copland's Variations
and Chopin's Polonaise in F-sharp
minor.
Usually played on Wednesdays,
the event was moved to Thursday
to avoid loud-speaker noises from
a rally for Sen. Richard Lugar on
Monument Circle.
Sims' all-Brahms recital in the
Indianapolis Museum of Art's DeBoest Lecture Hall April 23 at 2
p.m. will consist the Intermezzos,
Op. 117, Waltzes, Op. 39, and
Handel Variations.
Both recitals are free.
The former student of Leon
Fleisher at Baltimore's Peabody
Conservatory just returned from
Germany where she studied with
Arie Vardi in Hanover, performed
Rachmaninoff's Third Concerto
with the Hanover Symphony and
recorded an all-Brahms program
for Berlin radio.
Both recitals are free, however,
donations will be accepted at the
museum program.

'Annie' auditions
Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre
will have auditions for its production of "Annie" April 22 and April
29 at the theater, 9301 Michigan
Road.
Tryouts for adults will be by
appointment only on April 29. To
schedule a time, call Eddie Curry

Auditions for girls to play the
orphans in the show will start at
2:30 p.m. April 22 at Performer's
Edge School of Dance and Theatrical Training, 12358 Hancock in
Carmel, 573-8085.
Those trying out are asked to
bring a resume, an 8-by-10 photograph and the sheet music of a
prepared song in the correct key.
An accompanist will be provided.
Organ recital
Martha Folts will play a recital,
"J.S. Bach and His Circle," April
23 at 4 p.m. at Christ Church
Episcopal Cathedral on Monument
Circle sponsored by the cathedral,
Westfield Center of Massachusetts
and the Indianapolis Chapter of
the American Guild of Organists.
She will be heard in music by
Georg Bohm, Byrd, Franz Tunder,
Buxtehude, Johann Ludwig Krebs
and Bach.
A graduate of Syracuse University and Boston's New England
Conservatory, Folts records on the
Delos and Musical Heritage Society labels.

Concerto winners
Under the direction of Orcenith
Smith, the DePauw University
Symphony Orchestra will play the
school's concerto competition winners in a concert April 23 on the
Greencastle campus.

land from Fort Wayne, flutist Orlando Cela from Venezeula, pianist Sarah Priest from South Bend
and violinist Hanna Viljanen from
Finland, the program at 3 p.m. in
Kresge Auditorium will feature
music by Schumann, Demersse-
man, Bartok and Prokofiev.

Maennerchor's 140th
Conducted by Carroll Stegall,
the Indianapolis Maennerchor will
present its 140th anniversary
concert April 30 at 7 p.m. at North
United Methodist Church, 38th
and Meridian streets.
Guest artist will be mezzo-soprano Kathy Oehler, a Lebanon
native who has appeared with Indianapolis Opera. The Kantorie,
an ensemble drawn from the
choir, will make its debut in the
free program ranging from sacred
.classics to Broadway tunes.
