Beethoven Fellows provide
music for PianoFest series
Three pianists who were
awarded Beethoven Fellowships
earlier this year in competitive
auditions will give recitals at the
Circle Theatre and the Indianapolis Museum of Art this fall.
The PianoFest series will open
at noon Sept. 25 with an all-
Chopin program by Anthony Padilla. Of Chinese-Filipino ancestry, Padilla has been winning
awards for his playing since age
10.
This year, in addition to his
Beethoven Fellowship, he received a special award in the
Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. He is pursuing
a doctorate at the Eastman
School of Music in Rochester,
N.Y.
Padilla will play a full-length
recital at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at 3 p.m. Sept. 29.
(All IMA performances take
place in DeBoest Lecture Hall.)
Featured will be short works by
Beethoven and Chopin's 24 Preludes, Opus 28.
Both series will continue in
October with Daniel Shapiro, a
Los Angeles native with degrees
from the University of Southern
California and the Peabody Conservatory. He has won awards
in several musical contests, including first prize in 1988's Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition.
At the IMA Oct. 6, he will play
Beethoven's Sonata in A-flat,
Opus 26, Brahms' Sonata in F
minor, Opus 5 and Mozart's Sonata in B-flat major, K. 333. His
PianoFest recital Oct. 10 will
contain Beethoven's Pathetique
and Moonlight sonatas.
Completing this fall's series
will be Beethoven Fellow Timothy Bozarth. Born in Abilene,
Texas, Bozarth grew up in Val-
dez, Alaska, and received university training in music at
schools in Washington and California.
His Green Room recital Nov. 6
will consist of Schumann/Liszt
and Bach/Busoni works, as well
as three pieces by Chopin. At 3
p.m. Nov. 10 at the IMA, Bozarth will play music of Bach,
Beethoven, Liszt, Poulenc, Faure
and Messiaen.
