The Indy Jazz Fest collection comes from a series of music and cultural events organized by the not-for-profit Indianapolis Jazz Foundation. This foundation is committed to keeping the legacy and future of jazz in Indianapolis at the forefront through support for all organizations wishing to promote jazz. The foundation encourages individuals and organizations to utilize their resources to help further awareness of the vibrant Indianapolis jazz scene.

Indy Jazz Fest was first held in in June of 1999 in downtown Indianapolis, for close to two decades it has brought numerous world famous American and international jazz musicians to perform in Indianapolis. These artists include such luminary performers as B.B King, Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, George Benson, Chris Isaak, Ray Charles, Bela Fleck, and Sonny Rollins.  The Jazz Fest started through the cooperation of several Indianapolis businesses seeking to create a major cultural attraction to downtown centered on the cities rich jazz heritage. The Indy Jazz Fest and Jazz Foundation also work with the Indianapolis Public Schools to create jazz education programing to school children and young musicians. The current iteration of the Indy Jazz Fest takes place in the city in September and features concerts and events at venues across Indianapolis and is closely associated with the Jazz Kitchen restaurant and music venue.
