Gennesaret Free Clinics provides dignified healthcare to people in need.

The idea for Gennesaret Free Clinics began in February 1988 when Dr. James A. Trippi, a local physician, was volunteering at a church soup kitchen. As he watched homeless people move through the line, he began diagnosing their ailments in his head. When he asked if they had medical care, the response he heard was overwhelmingly, “no.” Awakened to the need, Dr. Trippi packed his black bag and brought some of his colleagues together to treat homeless people who spent nights on the pews of a local church. Gennesaret Free Clinics became the first agency in Indianapolis to bring medical care to homeless people.

Today, Gennesaret Free Clinics make services available where and when patients can easily access them. These include a Dental and Wellness Clinic, and even a Mobile Medical Van at two clinic sites. All of this is made possible by the dedication and hard work of more than 220 volunteer healthcare professionals and others from our community, along with 14 staff members. Gennesaret Free Clinics has medical clinics in seven partner locations, other not-for-profits and churches. They own three Health Recovery Homes for homeless persons who need a place to heal after hospitalization so they do not have to recover in a shelter or on the street. Other programs include Women’s Health Services, and the Jamie Blackwell Loveless Annual Flu Vaccine Clinic.

In the Gennesaret Free Clinics digital collection you will find newsletters, photos, and video tracing the history of the organization from 1988 until present day. This collection is regularly updated to include new material so please check back. This collection was made possible by Friends of the Library through gifts to the Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.
