Classical Music Indy is a non-profit producer and syndicator of classical music radio, and an advocate for classical music and musicians. The organization’s mission statement is “To inspire people with the power of classical music”. Their organization was founded in 1961 as The Fine Arts Society of Indianapolis, through the cooperation of several research chemists at Eli Lilly who wished to create excellent classical music programing for Indianapolis. This effort started out as the WAIV-FM station, broadcasting from the top of the Dearborn Hotel on East Michigan Street.

The Fine Arts Society of Indianapolis has long partnered with local educational institutions in order to further their goals of spreading classical music knowledge and appreciation. Starting in 1969 The Fine Arts Society began a cooperative relationship with Indianapolis Public School system. The society would put on a Second Programme broadcast in the evening hours which utilized the IPS radio station WIAN-FM. This allowed for more broadcasting of programing at a negligible added expense.

In 1983 in connection to the University of Indianapolis’ radio broadcasting expansion the Fine Arts Society became affiliated with this institution and began broadcasting on its current frequency WICR_FM 88.7.

In recognition of its history of innovative partnership with local educational institutions and excellent service in cultivating higher culture in Indianapolis the Fine Arts Society and its president Norbert Neuss were selected to receive the prestigious George Foster Peabody award in 1986.

In 2013 the Fine Arts Society rebranded itself as Classical Music Indy Inc.

Classical Music Indy is the non-profit producer and syndicator of classical music radio programs, the originator of numerous community engagement and education programs, and an advocate for classical music and classical music-makers. Their collection is paid for by the Clowes Foundation.
